Create Your Own Backyard Adventure

Turn a small yard or park corner into a quest: map, mission, and a silly boss battle with a stuffed animal.

How to do it

Keep the story theirs.

  1. 1 Walk the space together and name landmarks (“volcano bush,” “crocodile path”).
  2. 2 Child draws a map and marks three stops.
  3. 3 Hide clues while they cover their eyes — or they hide them for you.
  4. 4 End with a physical challenge: ten jumps, a balance beam curb, or a stuffed-animal rescue.

Kids draw a map of the yard or park, hide three “clues,” and invent a final challenge.

Paper, a pencil, and something to hide (pinecones, toys, notes).

Can they teach the adventure to a sibling or friend without you explaining it?

How to Prepare for an Outdoor Kids Activity

What children may need

Layered clothing, sturdy shoes, water, snacks, and weather protection. Tick-aware clothing may matter for trail outings — ask the provider.

What parents should bring

Updated emergency contacts, any required waivers, and a backup change of clothes for muddy days.

What children should expect

Being outside longer than a typical playground visit, listening for safety cues, and trying new skills with instructors.

Beginner tips

Check the forecast together and pack one extra layer. A positive “we try, then we warm up” mindset helps on chilly days.

Simple things to practice at home

Short family walks, identifying trees or birds, and practicing staying with the group.

Age-appropriate preparation

Younger kids need more breaks and simpler terrain. Older kids can help read a simple map or checklist.
